Twin City Garage Door - No one else can compare!

August 30, 2010 - One of the end-of-summer's main attractions in Minnesota is the Minnesota State Fair, located on the State Fair Grounds in St. Paul.

This year a new feature was added to the State Fair's Blue Moon Dine-In Theatre, located on Carnes Avenue and Chambers Street. The employees will now pull down garage doors at the end of the workday, instead of using sheets of plywood to cover the openings to the theatre.

With minimal headroom above the openings, the openings collectively spanned 34 feet. The customer wanted garage doors to fit in the openings but was told by other garage door companies that it could not be done. Twin City Garage Door Co. proved otherwise by gathering its commercial and warehouse crews to fabricate aluminum garage door jambs. Twin City Garage Door Co. chose corrugated doors to match the exterior siding of the theatre and specially designed door sizes to fit the theatre's openings.

The Blue Moon Dine-In Theatre is now more stylish and clean. The customer was pleased with the convenience of his new doors.

Garage door enhancement

Upside down, inside out

January 21, 2010 - On the morning of January 11, a worker at SouthWest Metro Transit in Eden Prairie, Minn., pressed the automatic garage opener to lift a garage door with a broken cable. All of the rollers instantly fell from the bent tracks. The 24-feet-wide-by-16-feet-high garage door flipped upside down and inside out.

SouthWest Transit called upon Twin City Garage Door Co. (TCGD), the largest full-service garage door company in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., to fix the problem.

"This is the first time I've ever seen this big of a door upside down and inside out during my 25 years in the business," said TCGD Field Manager John Reno.

The TCGD service team arrived to the site and immediately isolated the tension from the eight commercial spring assemblies attached to the garage door. They used three scissor lifts to remove the sections from the door one by one. One of the lifts was supplied by the customer, and the other two were rented from local aerial equipment dealer APi Supply.

"We thank the President of APi Supply, Wayne Berry, for his personal delivery of the scissor lifts," Reno said. "His swift response allowed us to take care of the problem right away."

TCGD used three Come Along tools to help lower the panels, disassemble the doors and remove all damaged sections. To secure and keep heat from escaping the SouthWest Transit building, TCGD bolted the sections then re-stacked it into the garage opening. The company ordered the new sections and expects to install a brand new garage door for SouthWest Transit next week.

Both companies look forward to continue their four-year business relationship.

SouthWest Metro Transit is a public transit service with more than 60 buses to transfer customers to and from downtown Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota, Edina, Chanhassen, Chaska, and Eden Prairie, Minn.

Twin City Garage Door wins the Trillium Award

Twin City Garage Door won the Trillium Award from the Builder's Association of the Twin Cities for excellence in building.

Trillium awards recognize the partnership between the builder and associate members for design and construction quality of new homes on display in the Parade of Homes Spring Preview. The awards were presented to 31 builders and 63 of their vendors and suppliers at an awards banquet held May 17 at The Depot in downtown Minneapolis.

Judging was done by professionals in the home building industry in four basic categories: Best Exterior, Best Interior, Best Kitchen and Best Bath. The four overall categories were divided into 53 sub-categories by price range. A total of 65 builders with 102 homes, and 113 associate members (those sub-contractors and vendors who provided the products and services to builders) participated in the competition.

2006 Monstrous Garage Competition won by Twin City Garage Door

Twin City Garage Door Company recently won the Monstrous Garage Door Contest competition at the 2006 International Door Association convention in Las Vegas for their work on the Champion Air hanger at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport.

Lisa Donabauer accepted one of five awards given out for "monstrous jobs" from a pool of hundreds of contestants.

The International Door Association (IDA) provides programs and services to door and access systems dealers, for the express purpose of enhancing their value and professionalism.

Q - Why is the need for a door so far off the ground?
A - The purpose of this door is to create an opening above the hanger door which allows for the height of the tail fin of a passenger jet to the hanger.

Nicknamed "Doorway to Heaven" this door is a 16'x22' Midland 2" Energy Saver Garage Door operated by a Micanan trolley opener. When in the closed, the bottom section sits forty feet off the ground.

New copper garage doors installed by Twin City Garage Door

Twin City Garage Door Company recently installed copper garage doors on a house in Golden Valley, MN.

Q - Why would anyone want a copper garage door?

A - Copper garage doors look good on log and other rustic homes. They also look good on homes with a copper roof.

Copper is resistant to corrosion and will last for centuries. Copper garage doors are purchased for the antique green or gray green patina that transforms the metal as it is exposed to temperature, humidity and wind over time.

The copper garage doors arrived in special wrapping and had to be handled with special gloves for the installer to reduce the risk of fingerprinting the surface of the doors. The chemicals in human skin will blotch the copper surface and show marks as the copper oxidizes. All of the steel hardware parts are covered with a powder-coated paint. The torsion springs are galvanized steel and the rollers have a pinch proof feature consisting of a plastic cap that covers the roller on the outside of the track.

According to TCGD's Field Manager, John Reno, there are only two other houses in the state with copper doors that he knows of; located near Apache Plaza.
